GV Nursing Department receives ten years of accreditation
Grand View’s nursing department has recently been granted ten years of accreditation, commemorating the quality of their education.
“Students who graduate from a nationally accredited school are more competitive as they apply for employment and/or further education,” Nursing Department Chair Cathy Homard said, “whether in Iowa or other states,”
Sometimes, lack of accreditation limits students on where they might become employed or where they might attend graduate school, Homard said. Grand View is proud, she said, to have a program that has always been nationally accredited.
Dawn Bowker, an associate professor in the nursing department, who just recently started teaching at Grand View, says that all students who graduate from an accredited program are eligible to take the NCLEX and become employable throughout the United States.
“The NCLEX exam, also known as the National Council Licensure Examination, is a standardized exam that each state board of nursing uses to determine whether or not a candidate is prepared for entry-level nursing practice,” Bowker said.
Homard said Grand View’s accreditation allows the department to look at the program and assure that they are meeting national standards. The first standard in program quality, according to Homard, is mission and governance, The second is institutional commitment and resources, the third is curriculum and teaching-learning practices, and the fourth is assessment and achievement of program outcomes.
According to Homard, there are 151 Grand View students who are categorized as nursing students.
11 students are RN/BSN
7 students are MSN
98-100% of students who started in the pre-licensure program finish (2014)
88-100% of RN/BSN students finish
100% of MSN students finish
