Wrestling coach Nick Mitchell’s mission goes beyond the mat
Coach Nick Mitchell built the Grand View University wrestling program from the ground up in 2008. He came from Wartburg College, where he was an assistant coach for eight years. In the few short years that Mitchell has been at GV, he has led the team to five NAIA National Championships and to many records along the way.
Before becoming a coach, Mitchell had a successful run as a student-athlete while attending Wartburg. He was three-time Iowa Conference champion and was placed into the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame for his impressive 114 victories.
Although the success has been gratifying, Mitchell said what he prides himself on the most is teaching his wrestlers to be better men on and off the mat.
“My main role is to coach the wrestling team, but at the same time I’m trying to help these guys understand the big impact they can have on the world around them,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell has two little girls (and some could argue 60 big boys) that he cares about and puts his all into day after day. The care and love that he has for his daughters carries over to the wrestlers that he supports. He wants to teach these men more than just how to win a match; he wants to show them how important family is and how they ought to treat others.
