Grand View football to play Drake football in wheelchair basketball for fifth straight year
Each spring, Grand View University pairs with Candeo to put on a fundraiser where ten football players from Grand View and Drake University compete in a game of wheelchair basketball. This will be the fifth annual game between the two teams. Grand View currently holds the trophy from winning last year’s game.
Candeo is a local, non-profit organization that supports adults with intellectual disabilities, brain injuries and chronic mental illnesses. They have over 310 clients they help support so they can achieve meaningful employment and meet goals they have set for themselves.
Last year’s event raised approximately $8,000 for Candeo. This year’s event has raised approximately $11,000, and there are still a few days before the game is played.
Those who play in the game say they enjoy the competition. Robert Lewis, Sr. defensive back, was one of the players in last year’s wheelchair basketball game. He says he volunteered simply because it sounded like fun.
“It’s a good thing for our program,” Lewis said. “Drake is our rival, so anytime you get a chance to play them you take advantage of it.”
Josh Calmer, Sr. defensive back, was another player that participated in last year’s game. He said he found it harder than he expected to play in a wheelchair. “It was different, but I got used to it towards the end. It was a good experience,” Calmer said.
The game also gives the players a chance to see what it’s like for those that use a wheelchair every day.
“I didn’t realize how difficult they have it,” Calmer said.
Lewis agreed.
“It makes you think about how grateful you are to have your legs,” Lewis said. “It makes you appreciate everything more.”
This year’s game will be February 27th at Sisam Arena on the Grand View University campus. Tip-off for the game is at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 2-10. With free admission for children under 2. You can purchase tickets at www.candeoiowa.org or at the door.
