Disney+: Memory Lane
After two years of anticipation, Disney+ is the ultimate entertainment platform. It has everything the kid in all of us has ever wanted. The excitement has been building up since Disney announced its new streaming service in September of 2017, and it is living up to the hype. On November 12, 2019 people were given the power to stream online and download all things Disney has ownership of. In my opinion, Disney+ has established itself to be as good as, if not better than, other streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu.
I would like to point out that I am a huge Disney fan, and I think gaining access to this Disney+ service has only highlighted that even more. There are so many things that Disney now owns the rights to. Anyone who is a fan of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic or even The Simpsons will absolutely love this streaming service.
For years, Netflix’s claim as the king of streaming was uncontested, but with Disney+, the title is up for grabs. Disney reported over 10 million subscribers in the first day of its launch in the United States and projected that there will be between 60 to 90 million subscribers by 2024. That’s going to be a big payday for Disney. But it won’t cost you all that much.
The cost for the subscription is $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year (which can save up to two months worth of cost) for great and almost endless entertainment on any phone, laptop or television. Disney+ is cheaper than Netflix and Amazon Prime’s price of $8.99 a month. Hulu’s basic package with commercials is $5.99, therefore cheaper; however, Disney+ has no ads and has a better selection of movies and shows, which makes it come out on top. The visual and audio quality are just as good with 4K video resolution.
While it is not as polished as Netflix is just yet, I’m hopeful they will add features such as a skip to the next episode button, allowing you to binge-watch any TV series, and to be able to speed up the reaction time of their skip/rewind ten-second button.
Disney has also added a bundle deal, which includes access to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ all for $12.99 a month. Hulu has a large range of horror movies and a whole other range of other movies and shows such as “Rick and Morty” or “Seinfeld,” and ESPN+ gives you access to lots of games, sports highlights and analysis, all of which Disney does not have. I can see why this package deal is a popular one.
A Star Wars series called “The Mandalorian,” proved to be a big success. Disney is also making shows such as “High School Musical: The Musical,” “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” set to come out later in 2020.
Not to mention, Disney+ has over 600 titles for its subscribers to watch. Disney is continuously adding new titles to this platform every few months and creating its own new content as well. Seeing the successes of Netflix’s original series such as “Stranger Things” and “You,” Disney is now making its own original series.
We cannot forget the vault of movies Disney has, which are classics that we all grew up watching. Going back and re-watching those movies reminds us of our younger selves. It brings me great joy knowing I can watch those movies whenever I feel the need to have my mood lifted. A large portion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is at your disposal as well as most of the films and every TV show in the Star Wars Universe. There is always something for everyone to watch.
Although I have many streaming services, I can say Disney+ is by far the best one of these services. It is worth the $6.99 per month. Between the countless titles viewers can watch, the affordable price and flexibility to be streamed on any device, I would give Disney+ a rating of 4.3 out of 5 compared to other streaming services. Once Disney+ updates its technology, it will earn that last .07 rating in no time while becoming a top streaming service.
