Angela Lose named 2017 Civic Fellow
Angela Lose, a junior at Grand View University, along with 273 other students, was honored by Campus Compact when she received the 2017 Newman Civic Fellowship. Campus Compact is a nonprofit organization of more than 1,000 colleges and universities. Their purpose is to not only prepare students for achieving their academic goals but also to prepare them for a successful life out of college.
Since she was a freshman, she has been part of Viking Volunteers, for which she is now the president. Lose is also involved with the AmeriCorps program, Viking Council and View Crew as an orientation leader.
One person from every university in the country has the ability to nominate one individual that encompasses the life Frank Newman lived.
Newman was the co-founder of Campus compact, along with the presidents of Stanford University, Brown University, and Georgetown. Newman also authored Higher Education and the American Resurgence.
“It was really exciting to know that President Henning viewed me as a student that represented such a high award and honor,” Lose said. “It was a huge deal being on a national level. It’s something I feel every college student dreams of receiving. So it’s not just me being recognized by the state of Iowa; it’s me being recognized amongst about 273 other schools.”
Lose had to submit an application, a letter that described why she was the best candidate and a portrait.
Each state has its own Campus Compact website. The award Lose received was done through the national chapter. She will be serving a year long term, which is known as the “fellowship.”
With the excitement of being one of the 273 students out the entire country, she will also receive the chance to travel to Boston in November to represent Grand View and meet with the community leaders from the other schools.
Outside of school, Lose gets involved in several other things. She is always finding some way to give time to her community.
Lose recently took a group to the Ronald McDonald house, where they made and served meals. Last week, they went to a nursing home to play bingo. She’s constantly looking for things to volunteer for. She gets students passionate to care about things other than just school.
Heidi Pries is the director of student involvement and new student programs at Grand View and has worked with Lose on numerous volunteer projects.
“I think she will be very successful because she is someone who is driven and looks at what she is doing with a purpose,” Pries said. “She does things that are going to help her and that will further her in her career. I think she will go very, very far.”
