Jessica Brown: Alumna staying connected

An alumna of Grand View University, a communications specialist at Easter Seals and a lover of theater are a few things that describe Jessica Brown.

“I think I owe a lot of where I am today to Grand View,” Brown said. “I grew up in the Des Moines area and I knew I wanted to stay in the area and go to college here. I knew I wanted to stay in the area after college as well and Grand View just really helped me.”

Brown started off her freshman year at Grand View wanting to major in education and become a teacher. She found out sooner than later, that she loved the communications department. When she graduated from Grand View, she said if it wasn’t for the communications department and the university all together, she wouldn’t be where she is today.

The size and overall community is why Brown still stays connected with Grand View because it’s more of a family than it is just an education system.

Starting off at Grand View, Brown always loved taking part in the theater community. To this day she said she is still a volunteer for the Des Moines Community Play House as well as the orchestra manager for Des Moines orchestra. She believes that having those experiences have also helped further her skills during her employment.

Brown has always had a passion for telling stories and communicating with others. It’s fascinated her enough to bring her to where she is today, working at Easter Seals.

Easter Seals is a nonprofit organization that allows kids with disabilities from age six to adulthood to come together and change the way the world views disabilities. The organization helps build skills and gives access to resources to these kids and adults to help them learn, work and play.

Being the first person to take on the roll of marketing and communications at Easter Seals, Brown has had nothing but a great experience during her three years of work. Being the marketing director, she helps not only with internal communications within the state but also external. Brown organize’s anything from promotional attributes to advertisements for the organization.

“What I really appreciate about Easter Seals is that it’s a really great family friendly environment and I really appreciate that,” Brown said. “What’s really nice to is you get to see your work and your mission just right outside your window, and you know what your work is doing and that’s really encouraging just to be able to see it first hand and know that you’re helping an organization that’s supporting the community.”

Brown still stays connected with Grand View as far as communicating with past professors and still keeps up to date with her past involvement in the Grand Views.
