Hula-hooping at the Des Moines Social Club

When I first started my search for dance classes around the Des Moines area, I was looking for the most obvious and popular dances such as hip- hop, salsa, ballet or line dancing. I never thought I would come across a hula- hoop dancing class.

My earliest memory of hula-hooping was from my childhood. Since it’d been a long time, I was nervous about attending this class. I was afraid of making a fool of myself in front of experienced hula-hooper’s, but because it was for a grade I mustered up the courage to attend.

When I got to the class I was surprised there was only one instructor and three students. The Saturday class is for beginners and those who want some extra time to polish up on their skills. This was good news for me because there was not a big audience to embarrass myself in front of. I also had more one-on-one instruction time with my hula-hoop instructor.

The instructor was young, fun and passionate about her techniques. She spent time explaining the fundamental moves. She showed me different kinds of hoops and their purposes.

The instructor recommended that I use a wider hoop that was heavier, because the heavy hoops are best for someone who is bigger. The heavy hoops have more weight and it does not require fast twirling and movement like the lighter hoops do. She showed me some hand and foot tricks that I attempted but was not successful at.

Initially, I did not think that hula-hooping could be classified as dancing, but by the end of this class, there was no question in my mind. With hula- hooping, one can incorporate creative dance moves or just move to the music of your choice. Within just a couple minutes of this class I was sweating but having fun.

I would recommend this hula-hoop class to anyone looking for an inexpensive and fun physical activity. The cost of this class is $5 and is offered every Saturday from noon-1p.m. It is located at 900 Mulberry Street.

In addition to the hula-hoop class, the Des Moines Social Club offers a variety of classes at different times throughout the week. A couple Saturday’s a year they host a Beyoncé lemonade dance party. At night classes are free, but you have to register online for tickets.

For a more exciting beat, salsa dancing classes are offered on Thursdays at 8 p.m. at Lime Lounge, 435 E. Grand Ave.
