Now Playing: Timeflies
When your favorite band isn’t getting the recognition you want them to have, it can be frustrating. Often times, people don’t know who they are so they never give them a chance. You’ve probably found yourself urging friends to listen — just waiting for the moment when it clicks with everyone else.
East Coast duo, Timeflies, offers a variety of genres ranging from rock, hip hop and the big sound of electronic dance music. Members Cal Shapiro (vocals) and Rob Resnick (producer), started the band in 2010, only releasing single tracks. On Sept. 19, 2011, they self-released their debut album, “The Scotch Tape.”
Resnick, also known as Rez, got his start in production when he built a studio in his basement and produced music for multiple high school bands. Since then, Shapiro has been working on his freestyle and singing.
The duo stays connected through “Timeflies Tuesday,” an online series that releases live covers, remixes and freestyling over original beats. In July 2012, “Under the Influence” was released as a six-track sampled-based mixtape. Their six-track extended play, “One Night,” was released Nov. 2012, and reached number one on the iTunes overall charts. The single, “I Choose U” followed and was released in April 2013.
Still not convinced? Here’s five reasons why you should check out Timeflies:
- Before they were even signed with a label company, they beat out Taylor Swift and Rihanna on iTunes.
- Two of their songs were featured in FOX’s presentation of The 2012 Cotton Bowl.
- They work with awesome producers like Mike Posner (who performed at Grand View two years ago).
- They created their own label, Forty8Fifty, and it’s partnered with Island Def Jam Music Group (Hip-hop music label).
- Lastly, they can melt your heart with one look.
Timeflies will be performing April 7th at 7:30 in the Field House, located in the Johnson Wellness Center. Tickets for the concert are free to all Grand View students and are allowed one guest ticket for $10.
