Boot Scootin’ Boogie at Miss Kitty’s

Grab your cowboy boots! Miss Kitty’s Country Bar Dance Nightclub and Honky Tonk in Clive, Iowa is just 16 minutes from Grand View University. Miss Kitty’s offers country line dancing and salsa/bachata lessons weekly.
An hour-long dance class is open to the public for just $5. Enjoy boot scooting to the best country songs as you let your feet slide across the dance floor. Whether you have no rhythm or are the best dancer in the room, Miss Kitty’s is the place to have a fun night out and enjoy line dancing.
Miss Kitty’s has two one-hour long line dancing classes on Thursday evenings. The first is at 6:30 p.m., and the second is at 7:30 p.m.
“We do an intermediate line dance class every Friday at 6:30 with the exception of the first Friday of the month,” E.J. Myers, owner of Miss Kitty’s, said.
Both Thursday and Friday nights have open line dancing all night after class. This is an opportunity for dancers to take the skills they have learned in class to the dance floor.
The first Friday of the month hosts a couple’s dance class. Salsa/batcha classes are offered on Wednesdays at 7 p.m., which is another great option for a fun activity.
“If you want to be just surrounded by people who want to line dance and learn line dance [come on] Thursday,” Myers said.
Not only country music is played, but a variety of other genres are played as well. Individuals under 21 can stay until 9 p.m. and a guardian must accompany those under 18.

Most people dress up in their country boots, bell bottoms and belt buckles. Others will wear regular clothes. The most important thing is to wear something you can dance in!
“If you’re going for the aesthetic, then absolutely (dress in country clothes), but if you’re going to just learn the dancing, then honestly, wearing sweats or athletic shorts and tennis shoes is also a vibe,” Rowan Noelle Getz, who went line dancing at Miss Kitty’s last summer, said.
Miss Kitty’s has a talented line dancing instructor named James Colclasure who has been teaching there for six years. Colclasure also competes at line dancing competitions in Chicago.
“[Colclasure] calls out every step. Once you learn those, you can learn a dance in literally 10 minutes,” Myers said.
Myers encourages people to take three classes before it truly clicks. With some consistency, those who have never danced before can pick up line dancing easily. Individuals who have had dance experience can still have a great time learning new dances.
“At times when people would ask for a move to be repeated over again, I was ready to keep moving, but overall it was still enjoyable,” Getz said.
I have been line dancing multiple times at Miss Kitty’s and I always have a great time. During my visits, I was accompanied by a group of friends. We dressed up in our country outfits and cowboy boots. Those of us under 21 only paid $3 for the class and got free water. Those of us over 21 paid $5 for the class and got a free drink at that same price.
The class lasted an hour and the teacher was helpful and broke down every step. By the end, we were gliding across the dance floor, not even having to think about our moves. The floor was full of people who made the room lively and energetic. Despite being a full house, the dance floor had enough room to dance comfortably. This was a fun activity to do with friends, a great workout and perfect year-round activity for both winter and summer nights.

The atmosphere at Miss Kitty’s has such a relaxed vibe. The line-dancing community is welcoming and enjoyable. I was able to learn from other line dancers. Some of them were very talented and I loved watching them perform more difficult moves. I felt that I could ask anyone at Miss Kitty’s for help and they would be more than willing to teach me.
Aside from line dancing, Miss Kitty’s will host random pop-up events and workshops. The best way to stay in the loop on all the activities is on their Facebook page. You can find Miss Kitty’s on Facebook at Miss Kitty’s Clive Iowa and through their Facebook group, Miss Kitty’s Dance Crew.
Line dancing is a great activity for anyone to pick up. I encourage all individuals to get out and try line dancing at Miss Kitty’s. The staff is inviting and creates a fun environment.
