Drinks and Hymns brings a jolly crowd

Grand View Student Ministries put on a Drinks and Hymns event at Luther Memorial Church on Wednesday night. Students, church members and Grand View staff enjoyed free Confluence Oktoberfest Beer, Root Beer, and popcorn while singing hymns and other well know songs such as “O Canada”.

Drinks and Hymns originated on the East Coast and made its way to Grand View last year. The idea was approved by Senior Pastor of Luther Memorial Church, Russ Lackey, and took effect for the first time last year. The idea of drinking in church does not come from an awkward unfamiliar place, but a place of non-judgmental acceptance of beliefs.

“It’s a teaching and learning moment to have control when and while, drinking,” said Lackey.

As students and staff walked in the church, Pastor Russ was there to great attendees and check ID’s. The sound of singing and laughter came from the fellowship hall. Songs were picked by hymn numbers being pulled from a basket. Anyone was welcome to lead or recommend a song.

Pastor Russ and President Henning were sharing smiles and greeting people as they came in the hall. President Henning was seen walking around talking to tables of student while enjoying his drink of choice. He also threw back some kernels.

“I love the Hymns and I will return for future years,” said Henning.

Sarah Price, a junior majoring in Graphic Journalism, has attended the event both years. For Price, this year was not much different from last year.

“It allows people to get to know each other and gives a community feeling,” said Price.

For most people when you think of drinking and you think of church, they are not combined. Church member Dennis W. attended this year for the first time. Dennis was not thrilled with the idea of drinking in church.

“I was not that excited about the idea, but now that I’m here I would come again,” he said.
