Celebrity presidents are all the rage this year, and Grand View students have their own opinions when it comes to who might be right for the job in 2016. Republican candidate Donald Trump and potential 2020 Democratic candidate Kanye West have both declared that they will be running for President of the United States. But how would the Grand View community feel about a celebrity president?

Benjamin Hurley (Sr.), biology major:

Q: Is there any celebrity candidate such as Donald Trump who you feel would be a strong candidate for the Republican Party?

A: You know, I don’t think Donald Trump is the right guy for our country. I think that he is pointing out issues that we need to focus on. He is also kind of shining a light on the rest of the candidates by calling them out and basically saying, “These are the things we need to talk about. You guys are shying away from them.” He’s not shying away from them, but at the same time I don’t think he is necessarily the guy that is going to handle the issues that we need to handle in the right way.

Q: Is there any celebrity that you think could be a good presidential candidate?

A: Stephen Colbert. He’s honest. He’s up front with everything. He is politically minded, and he seems like he knows what he is talking about.

Robert Secrets (Jr.), criminal justice major:

Q: Would you vote for Kanye West?

A: I definitely wouldn’t vote for Kanye West. I don’t think he would be a good leader for the United States.

Q: How do you feel about Donald Trump running?

A: I don’t know… I should look into more of the news, but it’s just kind of crazy. He’s this huge billionaire guy, and I think he would be great for the economy, but I don’t know how good of a leader he is.

Haley Kottra (Jr.), human services major:

Q: Kanye West is reportedly planning a run for president. How do you feel about that?

A: I don’t feel like that is a wise decision on behalf of his career because I don’t feel like it is going to go well for him.

Q: Would you vote for Kanye?

A: I certainly would not.

Q: How do you feel about Donald Trump running?

A: I definitely believe he has business experience, and he understands the economy, but socially, his perspectives are very blunt. I don’t feel like he takes time to consider his words before saying them.

Q: Would you consider giving your vote to any celebrity if they were to run?

A: None of the current celebrities. I don’t feel that they have really solid perspectives on the world that I would agree with. In previous generations, I feel like there were more considerable individuals, but at this time, no.

AJ Joss (Fr.), business major:

Q: Kanye West is reportedly running for president. What do you think about that?

A: I don’t think he is going to win. I think he should just stick to rapping. I would never vote for him because he should not be running the biggest country in power.

Q: Do you feel that a political candidate well-versed in the senate or congress would be the strongest candidate?

A: Yes because they have been working on it for a long time.
