Diner Dash Through Des Moines

Waveland Café
Walking into Waveland Café, I instantly felt as if I were at home. Everything from the smell of the freshly made coffee to the sizzling sound of the fresh bacon and the interaction between the waitresses and cooks made me feel as though I was in breakfast heaven.

My waitress instantly greeted me and started describing the specials of the day. Since Waveland has won best breakfast in Des Moines for the past 18 years, I knew I had to try their breakfast.

Waveland Café has been in business for over 31 years, but it remains the same as when it first opened. Most of the wait staff has been around for over 10 years. I saw how much fun they had working there, and that reflected in the service they provided.

I am a big fan of bargains, and almost everything on the menu was under $10.

My waitress recommended the Mexi-Skillet. With hash browns piled high, onions, taco meat, a heaping scoop of cheese, jalapeños and eggs, the skillet paired well with sour cream and salsa and made the breakfast experience muy rico.

The wheat toast on the side complemented the meal, and the spices in the food really stood out.

I give this diner a five-star review. I was very impressed with the café in its entirety.

Drake Diner

When I think of a traditional diner setting with retro bar stools, eclectic lights and checkerboard design, Drake Diner fits the bill. Walking into the diner, I felt as though I had traveled back in time to the 1950s.

The diner has been in business for 28 years, and has attracted famous movie stars and political candidates such as Joni Ernst. It offers breakfast, lunch, sandwiches, pastas, and even alcohol.

I ordered the pumpkin pancakes, and they were amazing. I felt like I was eating a pumpkin pie but in pancake form. The cinnamon and pumpkin spice worked together to create a hot and moist pancake experience. The best part of the pancakes was that they could stand alone without butter and syrup, but when paired with the two condiments, they became a perfect trio.

I give this diner a five-star rating because it provided the perfect atmosphere, meal and service.
