What does it take to be an RA?

College is many times the first experience of complete independence that students have away from home. Having this freedom can be a fun new experience but can also come with a new level of uncertainty. To help with this level of uncertainty, there are resident assistants. Every building on campus has RAs assigned to help students feel like their college campus is a home away from home.

As we see them walking around campus how often do we think about how much effort our RAs give in the overall wellness and functionality of the Grand View campus? We see them doing their rounds, we attend floor events and meetings, and we even get personalized door decorations. But do we actually know how much they put into their jobs? Beatrice Fitten is one of the many RAs we have here on campus. Fitten takes pride in her residence and gave us a little more insight as to what it’s like being an RA.

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes for Fitten and other RAs. Beyond their routine duties, RAs are expected to create a welcoming environment for their residents. They must promote positivity and encouragement while maintaining a safe environment. But how do they do that? How do they create the desired environment needed to make the halls our home away from home?

“One of the biggest issues students have here on campus when they first come is trying to find friends and meet new people. RAs are kind of like that catalyst for people to meet others and create that opportunity for people.”
