What is Iowa Nice?

We all have been there. You are walking to your 8 a.m. class and are just about to reach toward the door. Out of the corner of your eye, you see someone going to the same building as you, but they are about 20 feet away. Your brain starts racing. Do you awkwardly hold open the door? Or just go in? Once you get to the door, you look back one more time. This person is still around 15 feet away. What do you do? It’s common in the midwest to keep that door open. “Iowa Nice” is a cultural label used to describe the behaviors of Iowa residents, such as Iowans holding the door open, asking how a stranger their day is, or paying it forward to someone in a Starbucks drive-thru. People at Grand View University are from all over. Viewfinder asked Iowans as well as people from other states how they felt about Iowan behaviors.
