GVU Cribs: Dorm Reviews

Every dorm has its pros and cons, not everyone knows what they are, in order to make a more informed decision, these students represent each dorm on Grand View’s campus. The students share key features of their room as well as their personal experiences and the overall atmosphere of the building to offer a perspective of a potential living arrangement.

Robby Patterson, the Assistant Director for Residence Life at Grand View knows more about the dorms on campus than anyone. He not only knows the makeup of the dorms but also who resides in them and why they get to live in the dorm they selected.

“At the very base of it we grant preference based on high school graduation year, so someone who is a nontraditional student and graduated in 2011 from high school, they would cut in that first group of preference to sign up for apartments if that’s what they wanted,” Patterson said.

Placement is based first on age. The older you are, no matter if you have been at Grandview previously or not, the higher priority you have as a student choosing where to live.

“Then in February, we do something that’s primarily for transfer students, new students, or returning students. We do a housing lottery. [It] is again based on high school class grouping, but then also we have factors such as if they’ve had any policy violations during the year if they’re signed up for summer housing, if they have a higher end GPA if they’re in student leadership,” Patterson said.

The lottery is based on the student as a whole. It is based on behavior both academically and policy wise as well as involvement and engagement on campus. If the student gives themselves to Grand View and does well, they are given higher priority for their housing selection process.

“There’s a lot of different factors and we put all of those together to sort people within their high school graduation year,” said Patterson. “Then we just go down the list one through five hundred and let people come and sign up for whatever is still available.”

The process that places each student is consistent and has many factors that contribute to the ranking a student receives.
