Run Carbajo Sisters

The Carbajo sisters, Kelsey and Macy, have been running together since middle school, and the two women continue to compete as they enter their senior and sophomore years, respectively.
It’s not a sibling rivalry but rather two close sisters who push each other to be better with a little competitiveness.

“We always tried to beat each other up the stairs,” Kelsey, physical education senior, said. “Being on the same team is just one more thing to add to our competition.”

Macy, physical education sophomore, said, “We don’t even tell each other we are racing up the stairs, we just know.”

As sisters, they said they always push each other to their greatest potential and hold each other accountable, from eating right to making good decisions. Kelsey said she is harder on her sister than any of her teammates because she knows she can be; because of their unconditional love.

Macy said being able to hang out with her sister has made her first two years go by fast. There has never been a day the two haven’t seen each other.

“It’s been fun and a great experience to run with Kelsey,” Macy said.

The two said they share a common goal with the team to win a conference championship and make it to nationals. With the sisters pushing each other, they are one step closer to getting to their goal.

Seth Roberson, assistant track and field coach, said on the track and cross-country team the sisters are hard workers who listen and are both enjoyable to have on the team.

“It’s fun to have them on the team, Jerry Monner, head track and field coach, said. “They are always so full of energy and keep everyone motivated.”

Kelsey said she was never into running until she started high school. Her high school coach told her about the opportunities for scholarships for colleges, and that is when she found Grand View. She said she really liked the team atmosphere of being a family in practice and always having each other’s backs.

When it was Macy’s turn to look at colleges, Kelsey gave her name to Coach Monner, who looked at her throughout high school. However, Macy said she didn’t know where she was going to go until her senior year.

“Kelsey got my attention on Grand View, but I wasn’t for sure coming until the end of my senior year,” Macy said. “She seemed to like running, and I thought it would be a good fit.”

Kelsey said she found the team a lot different than the high school team, and she wanted to share that with her sister. She also wanted Macy to be a part of the team goal to win a national championship.

It’s neat to see family members where one has a good experience and the other wants to follow in the other’s footsteps. It’s interesting to see them develop over the year, Roberson said.

This will be Kelsey’s last year on the team; Macy has two more years. She said it will be different not having anyone to rely on and not being able to go to Kelsey for everything. Kelsey said she will stay in the sport and her sister will be fine and will go on to find a freshman to be a “sister” too.

“I didn’t think we would have another opportunity for us to run together, but it has been a lot of fun,” Kelsey said.
