The Art of the Beatdown

This past Saturday the Grand View Vikings football team routed the Culver-Stockton Wildcats in a 90-0 shutout. Yes, you read that right. 90-0. Coming into the game the Vikings were 7-1 and looking for their eighth straight victory after losing in week one. On the other hand, the Wildcats were siting on a 1-7 record. Despite that record, the Vikings still had to account for Matt Gunterman, the number one quarterback in the nation in terms of overall passing yards. The Vikings defense created havoc for Gunterman. The Vikings defense forced him into four interceptions, and while he threw many passes, he completed just fewer than 54 percent of them with no touchdowns.

Grand View junior running back Trey Smith tallied 83 rushing yards off just nine carries and was responsible for two touchdowns.

“Coming into the game I was very confident in our chances but I didn’t picture a 90 point victory,” Smith said. “We knew their defense had many holes in it and that we could have success running the ball. My first touchdown had me really excited as I ran into the end zone, but my second one … I didn’t even get touched; it was so effortless.”

Although the Vikings offense put up a huge amount of points in the win, the defense was also impressive. Not only did they force Gunterman into four interceptions, but also they also completely shut down the Wildcats running game. And completely in this case means completely—as in zero yards.

Grand View sophomore defensive back Kemaad Jones was a part of that defensive effort.

“We were always two steps ahead of them, beating them to the ball, to their own spots, and knocking them off of their feet,” Jones said. “It was fun for the most part although it got out of hand early. We were actually ready to head home when the score was 55-0, so the rest of the game was just a drag. I was just happy to be a part of it and share the win with my teammates.”

When you come out of a game that’s filled with a lot of points being scored, yards racked up, and highlights every other play, you have to wonder how it got there. Here are the key stats from the blowout win.

  • 90: The number of points scored and largest margin of victory by GV; both school records.

  • 0 (again): The number of rushing yards by Culver-Stockton.
  • 493: The number of rushing yards gained by GV; school record.
