Southern comfort spices up Des Moines
What are the characteristics we associate with the phrase “Southern comfort” or “Southern charm?” It’s more than just a strong drink or a handsome man. It’s the inviting warmth of familiarity with a kick; it’s the feeling you get when you enter into the new downtown restaurant, Bubba.
Yes, you read that right, Bubba— the cutesy name used to show affection toward a brother, pet or friend. Everything heartfelt or classic is embodied in the new restaurant of the same name.
On your walk in, old wooden whiskey barrels direct you to your options: head straight to the bowtie bar, take a left to grandma’s leather lounge or take a right into grandpa’s plaid pad.
I took a right turn; lining the room were booths made out of grandpa’s borrowed plaid, some cushions even holstered by his dark leather belts. Modern Victorian chairs gathered around the tables and faced toward a nostalgic display of straw hats, which made me feel as if I were in the bright patio of a Southern home.
If you were to meet some friends or wait for your dinner plans, I would suggest the left turn. The lounge is surrounded by round, camel leather couch, chicly plush tea chairs and a layered dome chandelier, which made sipping and snacking much more relaxing.
The seating arrangements eased us as our bellies filled with spicy and saucy dishes. The pimento mac & cheese had a smooth heat, with crunch from breadcrumbs and zest from green onion pieces. Noodles were filling and mother- approved, with a thick cheese sauce that complemented them perfectly.
I’m all about the sides, and I appreciate a restaurant that has solid side choices. There isn’t a single option at Bubba you could go wrong with. Each option, whether it’s the deliciously seasoned french fries, creamy cajun soup or the savory biscuit and cornbread side, never strayed from wholesome hospitality.
Their comfortable charm doesn’t stop at the decor or a happy belly; it’s the overall experience of the staff and the familiar backgrounds. It’s our server Keely, who is just as jazzed about the food and swears by every option being better than her North Carolina home. It’s the distressed brick- and-grey trimmed manicured walls that hold your attention like an old friend.
The overall environment was like a bright summer day at your grandparents: you are consoled by the classics and indulge in the feelings of home. Bubba was a sweet escape to the good times.
