In the Office: Cyndi Wiley

Cyndi Wiley, head of the Art and Design department, has an office filled with an eclectic mix of items. She picked just five of these to talk about, including a Lego figure of herself and a cat butt field guide.
When Wiley worked for Anheuser-Busch, she bought this handmade African mask from an employee sale of damaged merchandise. “I found it striking because this American beer company was buying these masks for super cheap from the Kenyans that made them and reselling them. And so to me that said a lot about first world privilege.”
5. Wiley has four cats, so naturally she’d have some cat-related items in her office. Catt Butts is a field identification guide for cats specifically by looking at their rear. “It comes with magnets and a cat butt surprise and a little book on the field guide of cat butts. The surprise was the hair ball magnet.”A colleague of Wiley’s made her a custom Lego figure of herself. Everything is custom, including the hairpiece shape. “She picked my hairstyle and color as best she could and then whatever pink, weird pants those are and some frilly shirt,” Wiley said. Wiley paired it with a Lego cat and keeps it under her computer monitor.

Wiley’s favorite sports team is the St. Louis Cardinals, and her paternal grandmother really liked the birds. When Wiley got the news of her grandmother’s death, she saw a cardinal outside her window. “I remember sitting on the couch after I got off the phone with my mom, and this bright red cardinal flew by and it just really reminded me of my grandma,” Wiley said. “That was pretty significant to me.” Now she keeps a couple cardinals in her office to remind her of her grandmother and home.
Wiley’s Snoopy play cooking set is a reacquisition of a childhood toy. Wiley said when she was five years old, she wouldn’t let her best friend Becky play with it because she broke everything she touched. Becky’s mom didn’t agree, however, and told her to either let everyone play with it or no one. Now Wiley said she keeps it as a “metaphor that I don’t like to share.”
