Originally starting at Gas Lamp, Des Moines Social Club is now the home to the longest running weekly event, team trivia night, according to Volunteer and Intern Coordinator Katie Ortman. Held in The Basement of the DMSC, team trivia brings crowds from far and wide, young to old who are looking to test their knowledge while enjoying one of Des Moines hangouts.

The Atmosphere

When you first enter The Basement, it is apparent that this old time bar has had its share of excitement. The atmosphere of team trivia is one of relaxation and comfort. With dim lights all around and string lights lining the perimeters, guests can easily enjoy hanging out with friends while teaming up to test their knowledge of fun facts.

The Crowd

Though team trivia is perfect for groups of friends, there is definitely a presence from older adults, professionals and families. However, I did notice that there was not a significant amount of younger adults among the crowd.

The Trivia

Des Moines Social Club’s team trivia may be the longest running trivia night, and it might be because of the trivia and announcers. Jordan Garcia and Diana Weishaar host team trivia night with their original questions and spunky personalities.

“Jordan and Diana have complete control over what questions are asked and the theme of each category,” Ortman said. “Those two have a way of really connecting with the crowd.”

Garcia and Weishaar have complete say in the content used, choosing five questions per category all relating to one another through the questions or the answers.

“We come up with original questions to use during the event, but each question and answer refers to the next question,” Weishaar said.

I have to say, the trivia content may be the only aspect of team trivia that is difficult.

The trivia content is aimed to test older, more educated generation. In my opinion, younger adults and professionals might find that the subject matter difficult to answer and partake in if they are not familiar with these subjects.

Overall, team trivia at The Basement provides a new opportunity to make Tuesday night a night to relax with friends, enjoy some trivia and participate in one of the longest running weekly events held at the Des Moines Social Club. Team trivia is a place where you can unwind and expand the knowledge of pop culture topics.
