Guy Cunningham, a self-proclaimed skeptic, originally from Atmore, Alabama, is a professor in the psychology department, where he has taught classes such as Addictive Behaviors and LOGOS for the past 16 years. Cunningham loves to read, strum on his guitar and watch football and basketball. He also enjoys talking to interesting people and pets and hopes to eventually end his days on the beach.
We asked Cunningham to pick out a few objects from his office and tell the story behind each object.
Cunningham’s grandfather sold real estate and made this mallet to use when putting for sale signs in yards. “As a kid, I found it, and I used to play Thor with it,” Cunningham said.

“My uncle brought back these from one of his travels,” Cunningham said of the dominoes that he played with as a child. “He was a merchant seaman for many years, and he always brought things back to the family.”

A picture from around 1910 of Cunningham’s other grandfather pictured in the middle with two of his friends. He worked for Swift Lumber, a logging company on the Gulf Coast. Cunningham said it is an old picture out of one of his family albums that they digitized.

“Every book up here is up here for some very particular reason,” Cunningham said. “These are sort of the books that I really either like the author or the book itself.”

“In Search of Lost Time,” by Marcel Proust. Cunningham explained: “My favorite author, my favorite book. It’s about sort of everything: love, jealousy, the changing of society, the introduction of the telephone. Just about anything is in it.” Cunningham said that in his 20s he had a friend who was taking a French literature class, and she read a passage aloud. He was intrigued enough to read all six volumes within a year.
