Bifrost Publication

One of three student publications on campus is Bifrost. Bifrost is a literary magazine that is produced once a year portraying photos, art, and creative writing pieces. According to Kelby Arnold, the student editor, Bifrost magazine is based on the idea of the actual Bifrost from Norse Mythology.

“Bifrost is a burning, rainbow bridge connecting from Asgard (the heavens) and Midgard (the world),” Arnold said. “Each year a student takes their own perception of the Bifrost and then chose a theme according to it for the magazine.”

For this spring’s edition, Arnold wanted the theme to be the transcendence of time and space. She took the rainbow color pallet from the actual bridge and used that in her design work. Arnold alongside her design editor Maggie Goldhammer, made sure their designs were very mindful of the theme and keeping everything connected.

“We included page breaks and each page break corresponds with the theme,” Arnold said. “Each break has a different color gradation and purpose.”

Of all things, Arnold wanted the piece to be something people would want to flip through continuously.

On top of her design work, Arnold has the responsibility of gathering all the artwork and writing pieces for each issue. She started gathering work in the fall semester and began composing the magazine first thing spring semester. The hardest struggle for Arnold was building awareness of Bifrost and obtaining the work that goes into it.

“I felt like I was hassling people by sending annoying group emails but if people know about Bifrost,” she says, “It is a great opportunity to put something on a resume or portfolio and having a chance to have your work published.”

The next issue of Bifrost will be sent to print during spring break week and  should be released during the second week of April. Arnold said there will be a release party, but she is still working on the details for that. They plan to have food and listen to readings from authors and editors that were involved in this issue of Bifrost

“This year for us, Bifrost is the portal to the unknown and all imaginable,” Arnold said.
