Collective Awakening
Helping students become aware of oneself and the world around them
Classes help shape students for the professional world but what about on a day to day basis and the struggles that come with balancing school, work and keeping oneself centered while exposing themselves to different viewpoints from surrounding peers?
Collective Awakening is a space in which students can share ideas and thoughts in order to create a community that focuses on personal growth and a collective evolution.
Founding member, Josipa Shimich, graphic journalism senior, said, “The whole point is to connect. Connect in a way so that you realize you are not alone because people walk through life aimlessly. We are trying to make people consciously aware of not just the stuff they see but the other stuff that matter.”Collective Awakening is a developing club that started out as a simple discussion between Shimich and fellow founding member and Pedro Cardoso, business administration senior, before attending the weekly meditation group held by Amy Deibert and psychology professor Dr. Tom Peterson. By simply talking as friends, these two decided to create their own group to discuss how they feel, ones personal perspective, the struggles we face day-to-day, spirituality, energy and everything in between.
Cardoso said, “The main goal is to open the space of discussion. To create a space where those ideas and those topics can be talked about on a regular basis. Our purpose is to change the world through ourselves.”
Each week, Collective Awakening focuses on new ideas ranging from self-struggles and daily ideas to energy and wellness. Collective Awakening’s first meeting simply came about when an energy specialist was mentioned during weekly meditation.
“The first meeting was about energy and the power of energy and how we are all connected through energy,” Cardoso said. “The second topic we are planning now is about wellness and the connection between mind, body, and spirit.
Shimich said, “For our next discussion we are going to be talking about wellness. Yes, we know how to feed the mind, the body, and then soul but then in a practical sense, how do you make sense of it and how do you bring it in your life, how do you make your life better by being more self aware.”
Meetings are held weekly every Friday in the L’s basement starting at 8:30 PM. Students can attend these meetings and founding members Shimich and Cardoso encourage those who seek additional information to contact them.
