Football seniors start to say their last goodbyes

Tyler Reicks, wide receiver, Blake Cunningham, tight end, and Jacob Stacy, wide receiver, are just a few of the seniors that will be playing their final games as the season comes to a close.

As Grand View’s football season is slowly coming to an end, the senior athletes are preparing for the next chapter in their lives after graduation.

The seniors are trying to decide what they want to do with their careers as well as what to do to fill the football shaped void in their life.

Blake Cunningham, senior tight end, said he wants to go into coaching in the future so he can pass on this knowledge of the sport to future generations.

“I’m sure I’ll maybe try to get some type of hobby or maybe I could help coach back at my high school or something along the lines of that,” Blake Cunningham, #10 tight end said.

Cunningham is a criminal justice major and plans on getting involved in law enforcement. As far as continuing in athletics, he mentioned that having a break will be nice for him, even though he will miss playing in the fall.

Some of the seniors agreed that having a break will be nice but want to keep athletics in their life in some way. Whether it’s coaching a recreational league football team or simply to stay fit. Football has made an impact on them and will influence their choices in the future.

“I think I have so much knowledge about the sport now by playing it all my life. The coaches are so good here that they’ve taught me so much that I feel almost obligated to share all my knowledge with the youngsters,” Tyler Reicks, #6 wide receiver, said.

Reicks has been studying computer science and plans to get a job somewhere in Des Moines in the IT field. Football has taught Reicks perseverance, hard work and time management that will help apply towards his future career.

The Viking senior’s passion for the sport will not end with the final play of their career.

Jacob Stacy, wide receiver, poses with the Grand View helmet as he thinks back on his past seasons as a Viking.

“I’ve kind of thought about trying to coach, maybe high school or something. It’s going to be tough. I’m sure I’ll be screaming at the TV a lot,” Jacob Stacy, #1 wide receiver, said.

Stacy’s goals after graduation shift from the football field to the business field. He is currently majoring in business administration with a concentration in finance. He hopes to one day work for either Principle or Wells Fargo.

The seniors will have their last regular season game November 14th at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

It will be hard for them to move on to football, but the experience has taught them that perseverance and hard-work will get them far.
